The first thing to understand is the spacing requirement inherent to all gardening. Take the time to learn the optimal spacing for your particular type of tomato. Most conventional tomatoes need to be planted 48 inches apart. This wracks up a lot of space quickly. Any closer and you risk the chance of the plant contracting diseases and the nutrient consumption will result in smaller fruit and lesser production. Always keep your spacing consistent!
